Mindfulness, Grounding & Distraction techniques, what’s the difference?

It can get confusing trying to work out which regulating technique is which and what the difference is between all of these tools. So here’s a breakdown of three powerful tools, that can sometimes be confusing, for you to use to manage those moments, where you can see stress or anxiety starting to creep up on you. These tools can help bring balance back into your day.

Mindfulness
Think of mindfulness as a superpower for your mind. It’s about being fully present, paying attention with curiosity, openness, and flexibility. In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness includes four key processes:
Defusion: Untangling yourself from unhelpful thoughts.
Acceptance: Making space for emotions without judgment.
Contacting the Present Moment: Anchoring yourself in the now.
Self-as-Context: Seeing yourself as more than your thoughts or feelings.

Mindfulness serves as a key practice for extending psychological flexibility by helping you observe, accept, and respond to experiences in a way that aligns with your values rather than reacting automatically or rigidly.

Distraction Techniques
Sometimes, your mind just needs a breather! Distraction techniques help shift your focus away from distressing thoughts and emotions. Unlike mindfulness, which encourages you to explore those thoughts, distraction gives you permission to step away for a moment. It’s like hitting pause to regain clarity.

Grounding Techniques
Grounding is like distraction’s calm cousin. It redirects your attention to something neutral or positive, like your surroundings or physical sensations. These techniques are great for easing anxiety and creating a sense of calm. Try focusing on the texture of an object, counting colours in a room, or feeling the ground under your feet.

The best thing about this skills is that the can be practiced anywhere and at anytime of the day!!
